Abstract

This study aims to analyze the performance of Egyptian exports of tomatoes and their products during the period from 2017 to 2019. The Constant Market Share (CMS) method was employed to analyze the sources of growth or decline in exports of tomatoes and their products during the study period. Likewise, the competitive price advantage of Egypt in some export markets for tomatoes and their products was calculated. The most important results of the study concluded that: Egypt achieved gains in export markets at the level of all tomato products under study during the period from 2017 to 2019. The competitive effect has the largest contribution to explaining the increase or decrease in the rate of export growth. The study recommends strengthening the mechanisms of Egypt's specialization in exporting whole tomatoes or in prepared or preserved pieces by any method other than vinegar or acetic acid, as well as tomato ketchup products or other tomato sauce. Also, Egypt's exports of fresh and frozen tomato products should not depend on the Asian market only, and pay more attention to the European market, with the need to target the European market also with ketchup products and other tomato sauce.
