Statistical Estimation of Spending Functions on Fish From The reality of Family Budget Research in Egypt

Abstract

     Fish is one of the food commodities with important nutritional benefits for humans. The research problem is based on although the average Egyptian domestic production of fish amounted to about 1448.7 thousand tons, and the available for consumption is about 1227.6 thousand tons during the period (2005 - 2020), which indicates the existence of a self-sufficiency state that amounted to about 115.9% during the period studying . This indicates that there is a great opportunity for Egypt to open export markets for local fish, In addition to opening areas of fish processing that increase the Egyptian national income, it is not limited to selling fish in the fresh form only, as the increase in the added value of the product has become an inevitable matter. The research aimed to study the extent of Egypt's nutritional sufficiency in fish at the urban and rural levels of Egypt, based on the reality of research, the budget of the family under study, and the comparison between them.
The most important results were:

It is clear that the elasticities of consumer spending on fish that these elasticities are lower than the correct one, whether in rural or urban areas, which means that fish are necessary for Egyptian society in both its urban and rural categories.
It was also found that Egypt's production of fish is expected to reach 2471.4 thousand tons in 2025, and the available consumption of fish in Egypt is expected to reach 1861,600 tons in 2025.

Search is recommended:
1- Expansion of fish farming projects in Egypt to meet the needs of the local market, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic, and the expected food crisis with the Russian-Ukrainian war.
2- Looking to increase exports, the most important receiving market for Egyptian fish.
3- Activating restrictions and laws against overfishing to preserve the fish wealth in Egypt.
