Abstract

The efficiency of some selection indices was estimated in F3-generation of the faba bean population Giza 40 x Sakha 1 at the experimental farm of Faculty of Agriculture, Minia University during three successive seasons; 2021/2022 - 2023/2024. High significant differences among F3-families for the most studied traits. High values of genotypic g.c.v. and phenotypic p.c.v. coefficients of variability indicated presence of variability in the F3 base population sufficient to achieve high response to selection for all traits. High estimates of heritability in broad sense for the most studied traits were observed
coupled with high expected genetic advance reached to 40.61% for number of pods/plant. Values of g.c.v. and p.c.v. % of the selection criteria and the other correlated traits were decreased gradually from F3 to F4 then F5 generations. Heritability broad sense values increased from F4 to F5 for all traits of selection for seed yield/plant and the different selection indices. High significant positive genotypic and phenotypic correlation coefficients between seed yield/plant SY/P and the most studied traits except negative correlations with days to flowering. In F5-generation, selection for SY/P detected eight superior families No. 1, 5, 16, 30, 48, 49, 65 and 66. Selection for SY/P ranked the first one. It could be conclude that single trait selection for SY/P was superior compared to the different models of selection indices for
SY/P.
